Some Thoughts on Peanut Butter and Pandemonium from Author Anita Daher

A through-line for The Mythic Adventures of Samuel Templeton, emphasized especially in the first book, Peanut Butter and Chaos, is that “magic” is simply truths we cannot yet explain. But that isn’t to say we shouldn’t try. Through exploration, imagination, and science, we’ll get there. Just as during long ago times, populations may have considered astronomical events, magnets, and mirages magical, humans will continue to poke and learn and suppose and study each curiosity until we land on theories and eventual proofs. Quantum physics leads the way in many of these explorations, often made publicly palatable through the imaginings of writers and movie makers. Curiosity did not kill the cat. It is still very much in a box, daring us to look closer and/or dream bigger.

NOMINEES ANNOUNCED!

Nominations have been announced for the Alberta Book Awards and the Manitoba Book Awards and it is exciting to see our authors on both lists.

ALBERTA

Richard Van Camp’s Night Moves is up for the Georges Bugnet Award for Fiction, and “Born A Girl” is on the Howard O’Hagan Award for Short Story list.

Joining Richard on the Robert Kroetsch City of Edmonton Book Prize Shortlist is Tyler Enfield with his novel, Madder Carmine.

MANITOBA

In Manitoba, both A Daytripper’s Guide to Manitoba by Bartley Kives and Wish You Were Here by Stan Milosovic are nominated for the Manuela Dias Book Design and Illustration Award for General Illustration.

Leonard G. Flett’s From The Barren Lands is up for the Best First Book Award.

Jodi Carmichael is nominated as Most Promising Manitoba Writer, and her novel, Forever Julia, is up for the Book For Young People Award in the Older Reader category.

Medal Madness

The 2011 Moonbeam Children’s Book Awards have awarded a gold medal to Craig Russell for his fable Black Bottle Man in the category of Young Adult Fiction – Fantasy/Sci Fi, a silver medal in the category of Young Adult Fiction – General to Sarah Raymond for her debut Signs of Martha, and a bronze medal to Gail Sidonie Sobat (a 2009 Moonbeam gold medalist) for Chance to Dance for You in the category of Young Adult Fiction – Mature Issues. Congratulations Craig and Sarah on such wonderful debut novels and to Gail for her continuing gift in writing for young adults!

Colophon Prize for Fiction Contest

**While Enfield & Wizenty will continue to read manuscripts for the 2013 season, the Colophon prize for fiction has been suspended.  At a time when the publishing industry as a whole keeps presenting new challenges, we simply need to control costs. Nonetheless we will continue with the regular publishing program, with normal small press advances.**

Bestselling author with Historical Win

The purpose of one of Canada’s oldest literary awards is to encourage the study and interpretation of the history of Manitoba. In its celebration of one of Winnipeg’s most colourful and distinctive areas, Russ Gourluck’s The Mosaic Village, An Illustrated History of Winnipeg’s North End certainly accomplished this. Congratulations Russ on receiving one of the 2010 Margaret McWilliams Awards!

Great Plains Teen Fiction Finalists

We are proud to announce that two of our Great Plains Teen Fiction authors have recently been shortlisted for awards. Congratulations to Craig Russell whose wonderful fable Black Bottle Man has been named a finalist for the 2011 Prix Aurora Awards for Best English Novel.

And congratulations to Nicole Luiken whose novel Dreamfire (2008) has been shortlisted for the 2011-2012 Stellar Award.

Word on the Water

Three Great Plains authors will be featured at the Word on the Water literary festival in Kenora, Ontario which runs from October 21st to 23rd.  Susan Rocan, Helen Norrie and Craig Russell will participate in the festivals Saturday programming.
